When Divya Thakur relocated from San Francisco to Huntsville in 2020, he was driven by a desire to create something impactful. A seasoned professional in the robotics field and former Director of Product Engineering at Cruise, Thakur didn't have a concrete business idea but recognized the potential in Huntsville—a city rich in engineering talent and opportunity.

After exploring the lawn care industry and realizing a gap for automation and reliability, he set out to make a difference.

From Autonomous Vehicles to Autonomous Lawn Care

At Cruise, Thakur led a significant team developing self-driving cars. His technical background, including experiences at Goldman Sachs and Microsoft, equipped him to pivot from vehicles to lawn care.

“The technology behind Yard Robotics is essentially a miniaturized version of autonomous vehicle platforms,” he explained. Using lidar, cameras, and advanced perception, Yard Robotics creates a 3D model of lawns to optimize mowing paths.

Launched in 2021 with $2.25 million in initial funding—$750,000 of which was Thakur's own investment—Yard Robotics has quickly become one of Huntsville’s highest-rated lawn care providers, offering services like mowing, edging, and trimming.

Powered by People

Thakur’s journey is not only about technology; it’s deeply personal. He credits his success to the support from his family, especially his wife, who helped maintain the lawn while he worked on their first robot.

The team at Yard Robotics is a crucial part of the company’s success. His head engineer, Nathaniel Chong, brings experience from managing a fleet of robots in military testing. Thakur emphasizes that employee satisfaction is vital, stating, “We pay our employees well above industry standards because that’s how you build loyalty and pride in your work.”

Designing the Future of Service

Thakur believes that dependability sets Yard Robotics apart. “The biggest thing missing in the lawn care industry isn’t necessarily robots—it’s reliability and communication,” he said. With a streamlined scheduling platform and real-time monitoring, Yard Robotics ensures that customers can count on their services.

Huntsville serves as an ideal testing ground for Thakur’s vision, providing insights that will inform future expansions. As he reflects on his journey from mowing lawns in Florida to leading a tech-driven lawn care company, it’s clear that Yard Robotics is about more than just technology—it's about community and customer trust.
