SEPTA is updating its service plans as a nor'easter bears down on the Philadelphia region, prompting blizzard warnings for Philadelphia and many surrounding counties.
The transit agency warns that "the situation and schedule can change very quickly during a storm like this - faster than some apps and real-time signs are designed for."
Key Information Sources
The best high-level summary of SEPTA service will be posted at SEPTA.org, and the latest information on individual routes will be available at septa.org/alerts.
If a route alert says the line is suspended, disregard any individual scheduled departure times you see on apps and the website. Until the suspension alert is removed, the line is not running.
Customer Service Availability
Customer service agents will be available at 215-580-7800 for extended hours:
- Sunday 2/22: 8 am - 5 pm
- Monday 2/23: 6 am - 7 pm
SEPTA will run service for as long as it is safe to do so. Route-by-route status, including suspensions and restorations, will be posted at septa.org/alerts.
Service Breakdown by Mode
Metro: The best bet for continuous service through the storm is on the L and B lines, as these operate below or above ground on their own tracks. SEPTA keeps the cars ready by storing them overnight in tunnels and maintenance car houses. Remaining Metro routes (T, G, D, M) will operate for as long as conditions allow.
Bus: Bus service may be suspended as streets become impassible. After the storm, routes will be restored one by one as their individual routes are cleared of snow.
Regional Rail: Regional Rail service may be suspended due to frozen switches and ice accumulation. SEPTA will restore service once it is safe. Note that Amtrak owns the tracks for the Chestnut Hill West, Cynwyd, Paoli/Thorndale, Trenton, and Wilmington/Newark Lines, and SEPTA works with Amtrak to resolve weather-related issues.
Access: Service depends on road conditions in your pickup area and destination. All riders should confirm their destination is open and expect delays during inclement weather. Passengers will be contacted via text or phone if their scheduled trip is canceled. During extreme conditions, every effort will be made to continue service for kidney dialysis and other urgent medical treatments.
Day-by-Day Expectations
Sunday 2/22: SEPTA will run service for as long as it is safe. As the day progresses, service may be disrupted or suspended as conditions worsen.
Monday 2/23: Any suspended service will remain suspended until conditions are safe. If service is restored, it will operate on a normal weekday schedule. Restoration occurs line by line; check septa.org/alerts for the latest updates.
