United Airlines is taking a significant step forward in its commitment to inclusive employment by expanding its Special Olympics Service Ambassador (SOSA) program to additional hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Newark. This expansion aims to welcome 10 more individuals into the program, bringing the total to 28 SOSA employees across all seven of its U.S. hubs. This initiative underscores United's dedication to creating meaningful employment opportunities for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Jerry Rice, the legendary former San Francisco 49er, participated in a recruitment event at United’s San Francisco hub, experiencing a "boot camp" led by current SOSAs. Rice praised the program, highlighting the dedication, skill, and heart of the ambassadors, which he believes are key to building an unstoppable team.

The SOSA Program offers part-time employment with full benefits, allowing Special Olympics athletes to assist customers in various ways, from guiding them to check-in kiosks to navigating the terminal post-security. Toby Enqvist, United’s Chief Operations Officer and a Special Olympics board member, emphasized the program's dual benefit: enhancing the customer experience while fostering inclusive workplaces.

Zehra Sayin from Special Olympics commended United for its leadership in inclusion, noting how the program shifts perceptions about the capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The program, which started in Chicago in 2019, has since expanded, offering athletes valuable work experience and the chance to impact passengers daily.

United’s partnership with Special Olympics extends beyond the SOSA program, including sponsorships and events like the Capitol Hill Day and the Global Athlete Congress. The airline also supports accessibility through initiatives like a digital sizing tool for wheelchairs and Braille in aircraft interiors, making travel more inclusive for everyone.
