Uncovering the Ongoing Struggles of the Dillon Post Office: A Community's Frustration

A little before 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, a line of residents gathered at the Dillon Post Office, eagerly waiting to pick up their packages. A sign next to the closed customer service window indicated that staff would return from lunch at 2 p.m. However, by 2:30 p.m., the window remained shut, leaving frustrated customers waiting.

“You can’t rely on it,” lamented Lyn Manton-Krueger, a Summit County resident. “We definitely have a problem in our county. It’s crazy.”

As the clock ticked, Tom High, another resident, knocked on the divider asking if they would open. After several unanswered knocks, a staff member finally responded, stating that the window would not open that afternoon. High, who needed his package for work, expressed his disappointment, noting, “This has been an ongoing problem for years.”

The Dillon Post Office has faced multiple unexpected closures recently, including a previous week where both the Dillon and Silverthorne post offices were closed without notice. James Boxrud, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service, attributed the earlier closures to staff members falling ill with the flu, hoping that service would normalize soon. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

Throughout that week, signs were posted indicating the post office would be closed in the afternoons due to an “employee emergency.” Residents in Summit County have long complained about unreliable mail service, with many feeling let down by the USPS’s repeated issues.

In the past, Summit County residents experienced mail delivery interruptions due to burglaries at local post offices and vandalism incidents, further exacerbating their frustrations. A recent audit highlighted that Colorado mountain towns have significantly lower on-time delivery performance, primarily due to staffing challenges.

As the busy holiday season approaches, Boxrud noted that customers should expect long lines and ongoing staffing issues, despite some improvements in the region's overall staffing.
