Social Security Administration Achieves Record-Breaking Customer Service Upgrades

NORTH CAROLINA — The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced groundbreaking improvements in customer service, showcasing enhanced efficiency across phone, online, and in-person channels. These advancements are part of Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano’s modernization strategy, focusing on technology and process optimization.
Phone Service Sees Dramatic Improvements
The SSA’s National 800 Number handled 1.3 million calls last week, a 70% increase from the previous year. The average wait time has plummeted to just 6 minutes, an 80% reduction from last year’s 30-minute average.
Field Office Wait Times Cut by Nearly 25%
In-person service has also seen significant enhancements, with average wait times dropping to 23 minutes, down from 30 minutes last year. This improvement benefits those who prefer face-to-face assistance.
Online Services Enhanced with 24/7 Access
The SSA has eliminated the 29-hour weekly downtime for its online portal, my Social Security, allowing 125,000 additional customers to access their accounts in the first week post-implementation.
Social Security Fairness Act Implementation Completed Ahead of Schedule
The agency has distributed over 3.1 million payments totaling $17 billion to beneficiaries under the Social Security Fairness Act, five months ahead of schedule. This includes 2.8 million current beneficiaries affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision or Government Pension Offset.
Disability Claims Processing Shows Marked Progress
Pending initial disability claims have decreased to 940,000 cases, a 25% reduction from last year’s 1.2 million. Processing times have improved by five days on average, and disability hearings now have 60-day shorter wait times since June 2024.
Modernization Strategy Focuses on Customer-Centric Approach
Commissioner Bisignano’s strategy emphasizes real-time performance monitoring and flexible resource deployment to sustain improvements. “Our goal is to serve customer needs quickly and completely, no matter how they contact us,” he stated.
