How AI is Revolutionizing Customer Service at Tractor Supply - A Game Changer for Rural Retail

AI-Powered Customer Service at Tractor Supply

Generative artificial intelligence is transforming customer service at Tractor Supply Co., the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the United States. The company has introduced "Hey GURA", a generative AI application designed to empower employees with real-time support, enhancing the shopping experience for rural communities.

What is "Hey GURA"?

Named after an earlier tech assistant (GURA, short for "greet, uncover, recommend and ask"), this AI app is now accessible to every Tractor Supply team member via handheld devices and earpieces. It provides:

  • Product information and recommendations
  • Inventory updates
  • Store layout guidance for new employees

"Every team member has access to 'Hey GURA' and they can get product information, product recommendations, product inventory," said Glenn Allison, VP of Enterprise AI Platforms at Tractor Supply. "It’s very much a needs-based business."

The Role of Nutanix in Supporting AI Deployment

Tractor Supply collaborates with Nutanix Inc. to deploy its generative AI solutions and maintain its node-based infrastructure. With over 200 nodes supporting more than 4,000 virtual machines, the company ensures a robust IT architecture to meet evolving business needs.

"The key is extensibility and to have a solid architecture underneath that we can [use to] respond quickly as the business needs change," explained Tom Henkel, Director of Enterprise Cloud and Infrastructure at Tractor Supply.

AI at the Edge: Enhancing Customer Experience

Tractor Supply’s "Computer Vision" component uses AI to alert team members when long lines form at checkout stands, improving efficiency and customer satisfaction.

"We’ve been able to virtualize point-of-sale, the loss prevention cameras, the AI models that are running on the edge from an edge computing standpoint," Allison noted. "Everything that we do is to help empower our store team members to give that legendary experience each time."
