How a Family Tavern Keeps Customer Service Alive for 50 Years

In a world of corporate chains and automated service, Bob’s Tavern in Avis, Pennsylvania, stands as a testament to the power of personal touch and family legacy. Owner Matthew Mann shares how his family's business has thrived by treating customers like family.

A Legacy Born from Snacks and Determination

Founded in 1976 by Mann's father, Bob, who left his Frito-Lay route to become his own boss, the tavern has deep roots. After his parents' divorce, his mother Carol took over the business, and Mann later created Mother Carol’s LLC to honor her. “Everyone knew it as Bob’s Tavern, but when anyone asked about going, they’d say ‘hey, let’s go to Carol’s,’” Mann recalls.

The Heart of the Tavern: People and Community

Mann describes the tavern as a “beer garden” offering a variety of drinks and frozen pizzas cooked in a Tony’s pizza oven that's as old as he is. But the real draw is the atmosphere: “It’s just like the old hole in the wall, a little dive bar. It’s clean and wonderful with great people. We deeply care for our friends and customers.”

The team hosts special events like a three-ball pool tournament (similar to golf, lowest score wins) and cancer benefits for former employees. Mann also treats his staff to a Hiawatha wing night cruise and leaves extra tips in the jar to start their day positively.

Safety and Respect First

While some profanity is expected, Mann’s team is vigilant. Two team members don’t drink alcohol, yet feel comfortable working without pressure. “If someone gets a little belligerent, we’re gonna let them know,” Mann stresses. All employees are RAMP certified to ensure responsible alcohol service and safe returns home.

Looking Ahead: 50th Anniversary Celebration

As the tavern approaches its 50th anniversary, Mann plans a celebration on September 11 featuring karaoke, bands like Flu Shots and Fleegor, and BBQ from Pappy’s Barbecue. “I’m really looking forward to this celebration for my team, our community, our establishment and my mom’s legacy,” he says.

Carrying On a Mother’s Legacy

For Mann, the business is about more than profits. “I believe in carrying on my mother’s legacy because my mom was very, very well loved and cared about in our area and community. To carry on her legacy in a way that we’re doing an honest business is really important to me.”
