Summary:

  • Grosse Pointe Park drops Priority Waste due to ongoing service complaints, replacing it with Express Waste Services.

  • Express won despite a higher monthly rate ($17.60 vs. $15.50) by offering dedicated staff, unlimited bulk pickup, and a recycling rewards program.

  • Priority Waste acknowledged issues but claims improvements under new CEO Aaron Johnson, including staffing and route optimization.

  • The switch reflects growing frustration across metro Detroit with Priority's missed pickups and poor communication.

Grosse Pointe Park has decided to drop Priority Waste as its trash hauler amid ongoing complaints about the company's performance. The City Council voted unanimously on July 13 to replace Priority with Express Waste Services, based in Warren, Michigan. The new contract begins October 1, when the current agreement expires.

Why the switch?

Residents have been frustrated with missed pickups, poor communication, and unreliable service. The city acknowledged these concerns, stating: "Residents have been clear that they expect reliable collection, responsive customer service and better communication when issues arise."

Express Waste Services wins despite higher cost

Priority proposed a monthly rate of $15.50, while Express bid $17.60 per month (current rate is $14.67). Despite the higher price, Express was chosen because it offered:

  • Dedicated supervisors and customer service staff
  • Unlimited bulk collection without advance notice
  • A recycling rewards program
  • Free back-door service for qualifying residents with disabilities

Priority Waste's response

Priority acknowledged service issues after taking over from GFL Environmental in July 2024 but claimed improvements under new CEO Aaron Johnson. They stated they "right-sized staffing, strengthened fleet readiness, optimized routes" and created "real momentum."

What's next?

Express will distribute new trash and recycling carts before service begins. The city will provide more details on collection schedules in the coming months.

This move reflects a broader trend in metro Detroit, where several municipalities have withheld payments or considered switching haulers due to service complaints.
