E-ZPass Billing Error Impacts Thousands
An E-ZPass billing error caused some drivers to be overcharged for tolls in October, according to the New York State Bridge Authority (NYSBA).
Which Drivers Were Affected?
New York and New Jersey drivers on the NYSBA Commuter Plan may have seen erroneous charges when crossing these bridges between October 9 and 10:
- Bear Mountain Bridge
- Newburgh-Beacon Bridge
- Mid-Hudson Bridge
- Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge
- Rip Van Winkle Bridge
Approximately 8,000 accounts are believed to have been affected by this error.
Understanding the NYSBA Commuter Plan
The plan charges only $1.40 per trip to cross one of the bridges. To qualify, drivers must take at least 17 trips during a 30-day billing cycle.
Customers who don't meet the minimum number of crossings could be charged $1.40 per trip and appear on their plan as "Unused Commuter Trips."
How to Get Your Refund
The NYSBA has instructed E-ZPass Customer Service to refund accounts that were overcharged. If you have questions about your E-ZPass account and the NYSBA plan, you can:
- Call the customer service center at 800-333-8655
Managing Your Commuter Plan
The NYSBA Commuter Plan can be paused up to four times a year for one week each if drivers aren't planning any new trips over those bridges.
