Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) is warning customers about a new scam targeting phone users. Scammers are posing as utility employees and spoofing GUC's phone number to make it appear that calls are coming directly from the company.
How the Scam Works
- Scammers leave voicemails asking customers to return the call using a fake phone number that does not belong to GUC.
- They may demand immediate payment over the phone or threaten to disconnect service within an hour.
What GUC Will Never Do
- GUC will never demand immediate payment over the phone.
- GUC will never threaten disconnection within an hour.
- Customers with delinquent accounts receive multiple notices by mail well before any service disconnection.
What to Do If You Get a Suspicious Call
- Hang up immediately.
- Contact GUC directly using its official customer service number (found on your bill or the company's website).
- Do not use any phone number provided by the scammer.
