NJ Transit Unveils Exciting Service Upgrades

New customer service improvements are set to enhance the experience at several NJ Transit stations, including Trenton and Newark. NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri showcased new interactive kiosks and announced that Newark Penn Station will undergo nightly cleanings, resulting in temporary shop closures. A new "Customer Care Ambassador" pilot program will launch during peak travel periods to assist riders.

“We changed out all the lights. It's a brighter station. We're now about to unveil customer service ambassadors that will be wearing these orange vests during morning and evening rush hours,” said Kolluri.

Addressing On-Time Performance Concerns

Riders have expressed their desire for improved on-time performance. Ysha Yah Benshmuel, a resident, noted delays of trains, prompting CBS News to question Kolluri about solutions. He mentioned three key areas of focus:

  1. Ensuring Amtrak conducts necessary infrastructure repairs.
  2. Maintaining reliable equipment.
  3. Providing accurate information to customers.

Kolluri aims to introduce new rail cars by the end of the year to mitigate mechanical issues that affect punctuality.

Bus Improvements on the Horizon

NJ Transit has also received modern buses designed for wheelchair accessibility and equipped with USB charging outlets. These buses can accommodate 104 riders, compared to the old models that held only 70. The initiative will cost NJ Transit approximately $2 million per year, with additional funding promised for 1,000 buses and 250 rail cars.

“But if Congress and the Trump administration for some reason say we're not going to that anymore, then we have to stop,” Kolluri cautioned.

Overnight policing will be increased at Newark Penn Station to ensure safety while still providing service during the night.
