Amazon's Latest Layoffs: Customer Service and Engineering Teams Hit Hard
Amazon has initiated a fresh round of job cuts across multiple teams, affecting customer service, marketplace support, and engineering roles in its retail business, as well as operations in India and the UK. The layoffs, which impacted fewer than 1,000 employees, were announced on Tuesday, according to internal communications viewed by Business Insider.

Internal Slack Channel Flooded with Questions
A group of affected employees shared in an internal Slack channel—with nearly 37,000 members—that they had received emails notifying them of their role eliminations. The channel quickly became a hub for questions about severance packages, access to internal job postings, and whether more layoffs were imminent. Workers also inquired about medical leave handling and whether they would retain access to Slack and Outlook during their notice periods.
Part of a Broader Cost-Cutting Strategy
These cuts are part of Amazon's ongoing cost overhaul, which has already seen roughly 30,000 jobs eliminated late last year and early this year. Despite the reductions, Amazon is preparing to spend a record $220 billion on data centers, chips, and other infrastructure for AI.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the eliminations, stating: "We're always looking at our team structures to ensure we're best set up to move fast as we innovate for customers. We've adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities. As part of these changes, we've made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles, and we're committed to supporting affected employees through their transition."
Anxiety and Uncertainty Among Employees
The layoffs followed months of anxiety among Amazon's corporate workforce, with employees bracing for another broad round of cuts. Some leaders have scaled back planning for the next several quarters, anticipating changes in teams or priorities. The uncertainty left workers parsing leadership meetings, calendar invitations, and team changes for clues.
A Trend Across Tech
Amazon is not alone in pairing job cuts with a bigger AI push. Meta eliminated roughly 8,000 roles in May while shifting thousands of workers into AI initiatives, and Microsoft cut more than 5,000 jobs across July and September. Meanwhile, Amazon has been reaching out to former employees, including some laid off in earlier rounds, about open roles in AWS and its AI businesses.
What This Means for Remote Job Seekers
For those seeking remote customer service jobs, the layoffs at Amazon highlight the volatility in the tech industry. However, opportunities remain in other companies and sectors. Stay resilient and keep exploring platforms like CustomerRemoteJobs.com for the latest openings.
