51 Years of Dedication: The Unmatched Legacy of a Customer Service Legend at Birkey’s Farm Store

A Lifetime of Service at Birkey’s Farm Store
In 2016, the story of Clyde McRae retiring after 50 years at Birkey’s Farm Store in Gibson City was told. McRae was the longest-tenured employee at the time, known for his exceptional customer service alongside his colleague, Tom Fairchild. Fast forward to today, and Fairchild has not only matched McRae’s record but surpassed it, retiring with 51 years of service, making him the longest full-time employee in the Birkey’s organization.
The Secret to Longevity
Fairchild’s journey began right out of high school at what was then FM McGrath. His motivation? A simple need to pay off a car and motorcycle. What kept him for over five decades was his love for the job and the people. Fairchild’s approach to customer service was legendary—greeting everyone warmly, ensuring their needs were met accurately and swiftly, and always ending with a grateful note.
A Legacy of Excellence
Store manager Craig Hanlin praised Fairchild’s consistent excellence and leadership, calling him a "one-man dynasty." Coworkers highlighted his unwavering cheerfulness and positive attitude, with Dave Gregerson noting, "Tom never complains or says a bad word."
Memorable Customer Interactions
Fairchild’s career was filled with memorable moments, especially with farm wives tasked with picking up parts. One humorous encounter involved a wife deliberately picking the wrong part to avoid future errands, while another sought fashion advice for her town visit.
Celebrating a Well-Deserved Retirement
Over 175 people attended Fairchild’s retirement open house, a testament to the impact he had on the community. His coworkers celebrated him with a Pop Tarts buffet and M&M Mini Blizzards, nods to his daily routines and favorite treats.
What’s Next?
Retirement won’t slow Fairchild down. He plans to continue his 41-year service with the Gibson City Fire Department, sing Southern gospel music, and enjoy time with his family, especially his four grandkids. His first retirement trip? A getaway to Shipshewana, Ind., with his wife, Sandy.
Fairchild’s departure leaves big shoes to fill. As salesman Greg Rueck put it, "You can buy certain things, but you can’t buy Tom’s experience and knowledge."
