The IAM Specialist is a subject matter expert in Microsoft Authenticator and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) technologies, responsible for designing, implementing, and managing secure identity solutions across a complex healthcare and academic enterprise. This role ensures that access to sensitive systems and data is protected through robust authentication strategies, balancing security with user experience for clinicians, researchers, faculty, and staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesMFA Strategy & Implementation
- Lead the deployment and lifecycle management of Microsoft Authenticator and MFA across diverse user populations
- Design and enforce conditional access policies tailored to clinical, academic, and administrative workflows
- Integrate MFA with third-party applications, VPNs, and legacy systems where feasible
Security & Compliance
- Ensure MFA configurations align with HIPAA, FERPA, and institutional security policies
- Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to monitor authentication-related threats and respond to incidents
- Maintain audit trails and reporting for compliance and risk assessments
User Experience & Support
- Develop and deliver training, documentation, and support resources for end users
- Partner with help desk and IT support teams to troubleshoot MFA-related issues
- Advocate for user-friendly authentication experiences without compromising security
Automation & AI Integration
- Use PowerShell, Microsoft Graph API, and other tools to automate identity provisioning, MFA enrollment, and reporting
- Explore and implement AI-driven identity protection features (e.g., risk-based conditional access, behavioral analytics)
- Monitor and optimize authentication flows using Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) insights
Governance & Innovation
- Stay current with Microsoft identity roadmap, including new features in Microsoft Entra, Authenticator, and passwordless technologies
- Lead pilot programs for emerging authentication methods (e.g., biometrics, FIDO2 security keys)
- Collaborate with enterprise architects and application owners to ensure secure integration of identity services
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Security, Computer Science, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- 5+ years of experience in identity and access management, with deep expertise in Microsoft Authenticator and MFA
- Experience in healthcare or academic IT environments preferred
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, and identity governance
- Familiarity with automation tools (PowerShell, Graph API) and AI-driven security features
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Certifications
- Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Security Operations Analyst Associate
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or equivalent
