Unlocking CRI Customer Service: Essential Insights for Student Loan Borrowers

What is CRI?

Central Research, Inc. (CRI) is the latest federal student loan servicer, assisting borrowers since spring 2024. Although CRI previously managed defaulted student loans, it now offers essential services to help you navigate your monthly bills, repayment plans, and relief options.

How CRI Can Assist You

If CRI is your assigned servicer, here’s what they can help you do:

  • Register for online access to your account for easy management of your monthly billing statements and payments.
  • Enroll in autopay, which automatically deducts payments from your bank account and reduces your interest by 0.25 percentage points.
  • Sign up for income-driven repayment to limit your payments based on your income. You can apply online or via a paper form with CRI.
  • Apply for deferment or forbearance to temporarily stop or reduce your payments if you qualify, helping you avoid default.
  • Track your monthly and extra payments to ensure that your additional payments are applied to your current balance.

Identifying Your Servicer

Your loan servicer is assigned when your loan is disbursed. To find out if CRI is your servicer, log in to your studentaid.gov account. The servicer's name and website will be displayed on your dashboard. If you need assistance, you can call 800-4-FED-AID.

Changing Servicers

You might change servicers if government contracts shift. Borrowers will be notified of such changes. If you consolidate your loans, you can select a new servicer. While all servicers provide the same options, customer service experiences may vary.

Before Changing Servicers

  • Download and save your payment history.
  • Update your contact information with the latest details.
