Increased In-Person Holiday Shopping in Billings
The National Retail Federation (NRF) has projected an exciting rise in in-person Christmas shopping this year. An estimated 157.2 million customers are expected to shop on the Saturday before Christmas, marking an 11% increase compared to last year.
The Joy of In-Store Shopping
Customers in Billings are expressing their enjoyment of in-person shopping. Theresa Ohl, who was shopping with her husband at Jasons Clothing for Men, emphasized the importance of trying on clothes to ensure the right fit and color. She noted that small-town shopping often provides a more personalized experience. “Customer service is a big thing,” Ohl remarked, appreciating the warmth of local shops.
Tradition Meets Modern Challenges
Sheldon Alweis, a partner at Jasons, shared that the store continues a tradition started by his grandfather in the early 1900s. He highlighted the satisfaction customers feel after trying on clothes, reinforcing the value of hands-on shopping.
The Aftermath of Holiday Shopping
The day after Christmas sees a flurry of activity with exchanges and returns. However, the NRF reported that stores lost over $100 billion in return scams last year. This has led retailers like Amazon to implement return fees, while others, including Target and REI, are limiting return policies.
Customer Preferences on Returns
A survey indicated that 59% of consumers would be deterred by a limited return policy, showcasing the importance of flexible shopping experiences. Local shoppers appreciate the ease of handling returns directly at stores, favoring the human connection that in-person shopping provides over online transactions.
The Local Advantage
Nathan Hirsch pointed out that shopping locally allows for immediate returns, enhancing the overall customer experience. The human connection in local shopping environments is something that online shopping simply cannot replicate.
