Stranded with a $4,005 Airline Credit: My Frustrating Battle with Iberia Airlines' Customer Service

The Dilemma of a Canceled Flight

I recently canceled a flight with Iberia Airlines, which resulted in a $4,005 ticket credit offered to me, valid until November 4. However, upon attempting to book a new flight, my voucher code was rejected.

The Customer Service Nightmare

After numerous calls to customer service, I received an email stating that my voucher was suspended due to security issues. Following Iberia's advice, I filed a complaint on their website and was told I would receive a response in seven days, which never came.

I've made over 11 calls to Iberia since then. Each time, representatives promised a replacement voucher, but it has yet to arrive. Meanwhile, I had to purchase a new ticket for $3,952.

Seeking Resolution

I want Iberia to either refund the full value of my voucher or reimburse me for my new flight while issuing a voucher for the remaining balance. Although Iberia had a reasonable basis to suspend the credit, they should have acted swiftly to restore it when they made a mistake.

The Waiting Game

Instead of a prompt resolution, I faced months of delays despite Iberia's assurances of restoring my credit, with promises ranging from “in a few hours” to “next week.”

The Medical Context

To complicate matters, my flight cancellation was due to medical treatment. Airlines often provide full refunds with a doctor’s note, so Iberia should have refunded my tickets, which were booked in business class.

A Word of Caution

In hindsight, I advise against accepting an airline ticket voucher unless absolutely necessary. These vouchers can expire or be revoked, allowing airlines to keep your money without providing a service.

A Possible Solution

A polite appeal to a manager at Iberia could have resolved this issue. I even contacted Iberia on behalf of the affected customer. Initially, they ignored my inquiries, but after persistent follow-ups, they issued a new voucher valid for 14 months. I confirmed that the new code is functional on Iberia's site.
