Beware: Maine E-ZPass Users Targeted by Scam, Causing Long Customer Service Waits

Ongoing Scam Alert for Maine E-ZPass Users

The Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) has issued warnings as many residents are falling victim to a smishing scam. Users of E-ZPass are receiving fraudulent text messages claiming they have unpaid tolls and urging them to click a link to avoid an additional $35 fee. It’s crucial to note that these messages are not from the MTA, which does not utilize text messages for toll payment collections. All official communications regarding violations are sent via U.S. mail.

Long Wait Times for Customer Service

On Tuesday, the MTA reported that due to the influx of inquiries regarding this scam, the wait time to reach someone at their E-ZPass Customer Service Center has extended to over an hour.

FBI Warning

The FBI has been alerting the public about similar scams since April, which have now begun to surface in Maine. If you receive such a text, it is essential to not respond or click on any links.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam Text

If you are uncertain about a message:

  • Check your account online at ezpassmaineturnpike.com or call the Customer Service Center, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m..
  • You can also report the scam to the IC3 at www.ic3.gov. When filing a complaint, include the phone number from which the text originated and the website linked in the message.
