Are You Tired of Customer Service Nightmares? Pennsylvania's Attorney General Has a Plan!

Frustration with Customer Service
(TNS) — Ever found yourself yelling “agent” or desperately pressing “0” when trying to reach customer service? You’re not alone! Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry has heard the complaints from residents and aims to simplify the process of reaching a human representative for consumer issues.
Advocating for Change
Henry, who served as the state’s top prosecutor until January, collaborated with a group of state attorneys general, including New Jersey’s Matthew Platkin, to write a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) advocating for new regulations regarding customer service for internet, cable, voice, and broadcast satellite providers.
“Internet, cable, and broadcast satellite use is part of daily life for so many Pennsylvanians, so customer service should be up to par when consumers have issues with services they are paying for,” Henry stated.
Daily Complaints from Consumers
The attorneys general noted they receive daily complaints about “deceptive, confusing, and unfair interactions” with service providers. They are calling for:
- Better training for representatives
- Shortened wait times
- Convenient bill-payment options and customer-service center locations
- Ongoing training to ensure accurate information is shared
- Access to recordings of conversations upon request
- Easier credits for service outages or disruptions
- Solutions for missed service appointments
Addressing Costly Practices
The letter also highlights concerns over companies charging fees to skip the virtual queue to speak with a representative. This practice “rewards service providers for providing service that is not universally prompt” and adversely affects consumers unable to pay these fees.
The letter was signed by Henry, Platkin, and attorneys general from multiple states including Maryland, Illinois, and California, among others.
