Veterinarian Content Writer (General Pet Health Advice) — Contract, Remote

Company Description

Smartway Pet Supplies is a premium online retailer based in Australia, specializing in over-the-counter flea, tick, and worming products for cats and dogs. Focused on simplifying preventative pet care, we provide trusted brands, clear product details, and expert guidance to help pet owners make confident decisions. Serving customers worldwide, with an emphasis on North America, we are known for reliability, fast order handling, and clear communication. Our customer support team is always available to assist with product selection, sizing, and order inquiries, ensuring a stress-free process. At Smartway Pet Supplies, we are dedicated to making preventative pet care easy and accessible for all pet owners.

Role Overview

Smartway Pet Supplies is seeking a Veterinarian Content Writer to create high-quality, evidence-based pet health content for everyday pet owners. This is a contract, remote role focused primarily on general animal advice—helping customers understand common pet health topics, wellbeing, preventative care, and when to seek veterinary support.

You will be a visible expert voice on our website and marketing channels, producing practical, trustworthy guidance written in clear, non-technical language. While some content will support parasite prevention education and responsible product use, the core scope is broader pet care education that builds customer confidence and improves the overall owner experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and update educational content for pet owners, including articles, guides, FAQs, glossaries, and on-site resources.
  • Produce practical advice on general pet health and wellbeing (not diagnosis), with clear “what to do next” guidance.
  • Create symptom-focused education that helps owners recognise common issues and identify red flags that require veterinary care.
  • Develop content series and content plans aligned to customer questions, seasonality, and search intent (SEO).
  • Support preventative care education including parasite prevention, weight management, dental care, grooming, and enrichment.
  • Ensure content is accurate, balanced, and responsibly framed with appropriate cautions and limitations.
  • Conduct research using reputable veterinary sources and maintain internal references for factual claims.
  • Proofread and edit for grammar, consistency, readability, and brand voice.
  • Collaborate with marketing and customer support to turn frequent questions into clear, helpful resources.

Some Examples of Potential Content Ideas

  • Everyday pet health and wellbeing: nutrition basics, hydration, exercise, enrichment, sleep, stress reduction.
  • Preventative care: dental care, grooming/skin health, health checks, parasite prevention education.
  • Common concerns explained: itching, vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing, ear issues, limping, appetite changes.
  • Behaviour and lifestyle guidance: boredom, anxiety, routine changes, multi-pet households.
  • Seasonal safety: heat stress, cold exposure, fireworks anxiety, travel considerations.
  • Household hazards: toxic foods/plants, parasites, choking risks, common home dangers.
  • Parasite prevention and safe OTC product use (supporting Smartway’s category focus).

Content Standards and Safety

  • Content must be educational and must not replace veterinary consultation or provide a diagnosis.
  • Articles should clearly communicate safe boundaries, include escalation guidance, and encourage veterinary care when appropriate.
  • Medical statements and claims must be evidence-based, responsibly phrased, and supported by reputable sources.
  • Content must be clear, empathetic, practical, and written for non-clinical readers.

What You Will Not Be Doing

  • Providing individualised veterinary advice to customers or responding to personal medical cases.
  • Diagnosing conditions, prescribing treatments, or creating “case-specific” care plans.
  • Replacing a veterinarian–client–patient relationship (VCPR) or offering telehealth-style consultations.
  • Writing content that makes unsubstantiated medical claims, guarantees outcomes, or promotes unsafe use of products.
  • Creating regulated medical advertising copy that implies prescription authority or restricted claims.
  • Handling customer support tickets, order enquiries, refunds, shipping issues, or live chat support.
  • Managing paid media campaigns or ad account execution (unless separately agreed).
  • Producing graphic clinical imagery or detailed procedural/medical how-to content beyond safe, general first-aid guidance.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Health, or a closely related field (required).
  • Strong veterinary knowledge with the ability to translate clinical information into clear, consumer-friendly guidance.
  • Proven experience in web content writing, long-form educational writing, and proofreading/editing.
  • Ability to research thoroughly and maintain a high standard of accuracy and responsibility.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills; able to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable collaborating remotely and incorporating feedback through review cycles.

Highly regarded:

  • Experience writing for consumer health, pet owners, eCommerce, or veterinary education platforms.
  • Understanding of SEO best practices and content structuring for readability and search intent.
  • Familiarity with common parasite prevention products and general preventative care recommendations.

Contract Details

  • Contract / freelance engagement (hours and rate negotiable).
  • Fully remote and asynchronous, with regular check-ins.
  • Deliverables-based workflow (e.g., articles per week/month, content refreshes, evergreen resource builds).
  • Ongoing work potential based on performance and business needs.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume/CV and 2–3 writing samples (preferably consumer-facing pet health content). If you have published work, include links. We welcome a short note outlining your clinical background and the pet health topics you most enjoy writing about.
