Job Description

Posted on: November 25, 2025

Emerald Publishing is an organisation like no other. While their entire mission is centred around publishing research that has real world impact, they go further than that with their company culture:

  • Top 50 Employer for Gender Equality
  • Age Diverse Employer
  • Disability Confident Leader
  • Inclusive Employers Accredited
  • Menopause Workplace Pledge
  • Open Org Accredited
  • Flexa endorsed

...and some of the most supportive managers we've ever had the pleasure of meeting!

(All three people we've previously placed here as interns absolutely loved it, with one staying on after their internship and one being hired on a permanent basis with another publisher. The opportunities to learn and progress at Emerald are endless.)

Emerald is also one of the world's leading digital-first publishers, commissioning, curating and showcasing research that can make a real difference. They work with thousands of universities and business schools across the world to share knowledge and provoke the kind of debate that leads to positive change. They are passionate about people and doing things differently.

B-Radical is now supporting Emerald to hire a new Commissioning Assistant to join their Journals team on a permanent, remote-first basis. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the publishing process, provide crucial administrative support and help grow their portfolio of journals. The role is remote-first with a request to be in Leeds once per month for team meetings. The salary for this role is up to £25k.

As a Commissioning Assistant, you’ll play a key role in supporting the Journals team with various day-to-day tasks across multiple subject portfolios. From conducting market research and managing editorial tasks, to deputising for Commissioning Editors, this role gives you the chance to work closely with both internal teams and external stakeholders to help drive the development and growth of our journals.

You’ll be doing things like:

  • Administrative support: Preparing publishing reports, updating journal homepages, managing content lists and coordinating workflow and platform enhancements for journals.
  • Project support: Helping with research, marketing, and social media campaigns, supporting award programmes, and collaborating cross-functionally to achieve department goals.
  • Editorial assistance: Managing contracts and agreements, assisting with editor payments, and supporting the Commissioning Editor with managing the forward programme and backlist maintenance.

We hope you’ll have come with the following:

  • Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, strong organisational abilities, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience: Previous experience in an administrative or coordination role, ideally working with different people and departments.
  • Behaviours: A team player who is proactive, eager to develop professionally, and open to feedback.

We’re looking for someone who thrives in a flexible, collaborative environment and is eager to contribute to meaningful projects. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of academic publishing, content licensing, and publishing ethics as you grow in the role.

As part of B-Radical’s commitment to eliminating pay gaps between different groups through our “No Salary History Policy”, we’ll never ask you for your current or previous salaries. We'll simply ask for your salary expectations to ensure they fall in line with the organisation’s budget for the role. Additionally, we pride ourselves on delivering an excellent candidate experience, so any applicant who applies to this advert will receive a response, regardless of the outcome.__To apply for this role, please send your CV to holly@b-radical.co.uk or apply through this advert. If you’d like to have a chat with us before you apply, please reach out to Holly directly, either via email or DM.

We look forward to hearing from you!
